After learning about the Olympics, we understand what sportsmanship is about. We also have read about people who have demonstrated wonderful sportsmanship at the Olympics. Earlier this month, a former Olympic athlete Marion Jones admitted to using illegal drugs. The committee is now going to take away her Olympic medals. Read the following link and tell me what you think. Should they take away her medals or not?
One thing to think about, in professional sports there are a lot of allegations of performance enhancement drugs. Most players will do whatever it takes to get an edge on the competition. What do you think should be done?

I think they should not give her any medals back. If she took drugs that give her an energy boost that is not fair to the other athletes.Yes, some athletes want to do anything so they can win, but that is not the right way to win. You have to train hard to win. If people take drugs that give them extra energy its not a challenge.Sometimes it is better to struggle than to win.
Yes, i think they should take away her medals because she used illegal drugs to enhance her performance. Instead of using drugs, she should just train harder to win. The drugs may help her win, but they can really do damage to your body. If they didn't catch her using drugs, she still might be using them. She might have used her money from the races to buy drugs. I think they should ban her from competing in the Olympics or any International event.
I think she should have all of her medals taken away. That is cheating and it isn't fair to the other competitors. And the Olympics should be fair.
I think that the committee should take the medals and the drugs away.Marion Jones shouldn't have to use drugs just to win a race that is just stupid first of all your body can get harmed by drugs.
Second of all she is stiil a fast runner. If she didn't take the drugs she would have not been broke maybe she should of thought about that before she went on to do illegal drugs. Next time when any athlete uses drug they should think how its going to affect them and their families.
She admitted to being on steroids. She was allegedly doing something that no one else was doing just to be better than them.
I think that she should not get her medals back if she used drugs to win then thats not fair for other athletes who tried there hardest and some athletes will try any thing to win. If it is within the rules then they should try that stratagy
Sportmanship is a big thing in the olympics when athletes sho sportsmanship people recognize them as good people and that is great. I think that it is good that they have taken all the money and medals that she has won because it wasn't fair to others that she did drugs and won the races when the other people raced fairly. I believe that drugs that enhance your performance is wrong and should not be used for any sports. I would rather have a better feeling knowing that I played the competition fairly than to lie to myself and other people.
I most certainly think her medals should be taken away. She is a role model to younger people because of her success in her past. Because she is a role model she is setting bad examples for young ones that tend to look up to her. Letting her keep her medals may look as if it was no problem that she was taking drugs. If it's ok for her to take drugs and still be somewhat successful, other youth will think the same. Taking her medals away would show people that no matter who you are illegal drugs is not something you do.
As for the athletic society that has dealt with other drug users. I think yearly tests should be taken on all professional athletes for precaution.
Marion was accused of taking illegal drugs and actually admitted that she did. She won medals in the 2000 summer Olympics while taking these drugs and that was obviously unfair to her drug-free competitors. I think her medals should be taken away because taking these drugs enhances her performance so anything she won was not on her own. I think that the Olympic spirit is getting lost, forgotten when winning becomes so much more important to the athletes.
I agree with Chris. The Olympics is a venue that encourages good sportsmanship. Taking steroids is cheating. When you cheat you are not being a good sport.
I think they should take away her medals because she didn't earn them. I think that she should have thought about the consequences before she used drugs.
I think that that medals should be taken away because she used a drug that was banned.....Also at the olympics your supposed to show what you can do not what drugs can help you do
I think she should have her medals taken away. She did not earn them rightfully if she was on drugs. The Olympics are not about winning. The Olympics are about showing good sportsmanship and peace between nations. Using drugs will give her an energy boost which is not fair to the other athletes. The struggle and hardwork athletes do is sometimes better than cheating and winning.
I think that they should take away her medals because she earned them by cheating and in our agenda it says "Winners never cheat, Cheaters never win". It was not fair to the other athletes for her to cheat. People do anything to win, drugs can permanently hurt your body.
What about Barry Bonds? He is the Home Run King of major league baseball. He looks as if he has used drugs to get to where he is. But, he is still playing baseball and holding on to one of the greatest records of all sports.
I think she should have her medals taken away because she might have been using the drugs cheat. I also think she should keep them because she worked hard to get her medals. I Still they should take her medals away for misusing the money she earned.
Why should Marion Jones be stripped away of her medals, when Barry Bonds has had nothing happen to him?
She came clean and admitted what she did. He continues to lie about it and gets to keep enjoying his success.
I think they did the right thing by taking her medals away if she used performance-enhancing drugs than that to me is cheating. That is not good sportsmanship. Also think of the athletes who were competing against her, how fair is it to them. Yes, I do understand the she had the desire to win but that is not the way to do it. You have to put in time and effort and have the determination to win.
I think when you cheat, your getting an unfair advantage. The other athletes play fair and don't use drugs to enhance their skills.
I think that sceja_89 is right. They should take her medals away since she abused drugs and had that extra power to win that she didn't deserve, when someone else could of won.I think if she wanted to win she should of actually work for it then take drugs. When I run in a race I don't aways win and yeah I get upset, but for every lost it makes want to practice harder and not give up.
In the Olympics, sportsmanship is one of the most important things. It shows other people that the athletes won't be unfair and cheat to win. They all want to play it fair no matter how hard it will be. When I found out that Marion Jones used drugs while running in the Olympics I was disappointed. She was one of my role model because she ran track and was good. I think she wanted to win so badly just to prove everyone that she was that good she decided to do it in a unfair way. But the real question is how many other people were using the steroids? Maybe she wasn't just the only one. I still think what she did was very wrong but I am not sure that that she should get her medals take away. She has already lost everything.
I think that she should definaltely have her medals taken away. The reason I think that is because she cheated by using steriods. That is not fair to herself and the others around her. She should also get her medals away because she misused the money she earned by spending it on illegal drugs.
I think that having good sportsmanship is very important in the olympics as to any other sport that requires it.I think that that the girl was being a good sport but at the same time she wasn't because she actually admitted to taking steroids but on the other hand she did something bad to make herself seem good. But who knows if anyone else is taking steroids.
I understand that every athlete wants to win and that every athlete wants to be better than everyone else. I think ahtletes are forgetting what the Olympics are really about. The Olympics are NOT about winning. It is about competing with everyone around the world and being able to unite every country in the world by participating in something we all have in common, sports. I think that the athletes' heads are clouded with the idea of winning and the gold medal that they are blind to see the true Olympic spirit.
Barry Bonds, is going to be remembered by two things. The first one is that he made an all time record in the Mlb. The seconds is that he used steroids to achieve that all time record. Yes a lot of people are happy that Barry Bonds got an all time record, but other people don't like that he took steroids to get that record. It is upsetting that he "cheats" to get records.
What are the Olympics about? The Olympics are about sportsmanship. Marion Jones was not showing very good sportsmanship she was taking steroids.Yes, everyone wants to win but you need to try not just take drugs if you try you have a better chance of getting a medal and not get them taken away.
I for one think that is is only fair she gets her medals. She used drugs which isn't fair for the rest of the athletes
The Olympics have always been filled with fair games and wonderful sportsmanship ,but what Marion Jones did was the complete opposite. Yes, she did win those medals, But she didn't win them fairly. So there for she should have then taken away and given to the runner-up of the competition that they competed in . As the Baron de Coubertin said "The most important thing in the Olympics Games is not to win, but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well."
i think they should let her keep her medals they have already taken away her mothers house and forced to sell land they should also not let her compete in anymore olympics
I think they should take her medals because she could of be using drugs illegal during the Olympics when she won the medals to help her win.
I think she should have her medals taken away, but not her teammates if they didn't use drug like she did.
I think that they should take her medals because she used illegal drugs to enhance her performance. Better yet she should have trained instead of taking drugs. Training is much more hard to do but it's worth the risk. taking drugs to enhance your performance is not the right thing to do because the drugs could damage your body.
I think that she should get stripped of her medals. I don't see why she has to use steriods to do her sport. she thinks she's better than all those people that don't you sterionds . Thats pathetic . The law says you can't use steriods for any sports, if they say that then why let some people get by doing that?
I think it was right for them to take away her medals. She might have won them...but not fairly. Even though she admitted to it, it was still wrong to do it. I understand that she might have wanted it so bad, but there is easier ways to get there then by taking steroids. She cheated and by cheating the only person it hurts is the person who cheated. She lost her house, money, and some of her property. So sometimes it is better to work really hard and loose then to not try and cheat and when.
Man they should totally take them medals back!......she dont deserve them. True, some athletes just want to win but they should win fair an square! not like jones she a big cheater!

I think they should take her medals away, since other athletes were doing steroids and got their medals tookin away, she should not have. think what the steroids could have effected her. But her team mates should keep them because they didn't know she was taking them. I had a cousin who actually died from overdoses of steroids and I didn't get to say good bye to me fav. cousin. I still miss him. I wish I could have stop him I feel guilty for not telling his parents but they said it's not my fault. I know but I still feel like it's my fault!
1Yeah, I think they should take away Jones medals. they should because if you cheat in like a big thing where they test your urine and blood and everything. She might not only be the only one who knows. She even admit that she was taking illegal drugs. She even had to sell her moms house to get money. That's not good spotsmanship if you cheat. She looks like a good person but she is not a good sport.

I think that they should take her medals away. Sure she won them but she used steroids so she don't deserve them.
yes, because she worked hard but she took those pills so she could run harder and won she got the medal there are a lot of other athlets that do that do that and they win and some don't. She can get all her medals taken away but they might not because she won all the medals.
I agree with Olivia my sister looks up to her and now I'm afraid she'll start doing drugs.
these athletes are really messed up about this drug things
I agree with the points made in your posts, it is evident that you have given this issue a lot of thought. Most of the posts are very well written, however there are a few posts that were not carefully written. In my opinion these posts do not have validity. If you want people to respect your opinion then you should have enough respect for your reader to write correctly. Grammar and punctuation is important!
